Lough Gur and Grange Stone Circle
Explore Ancient Ireland at Lough Gur's Heritage Centre in an archaeological landscape with many historical sites and enchanting scenery, walk the 110 steps past the remains of an early Christian farmstead up to a view point overlooking the lake and learn about 22 local tree varieties along the paths. There is also a "wishing seat", the site of a bronze age Crannog and the castles of the Earls of Desmond. There are many outdoor seating areas perfect for a picnic, if the weather is kind enough.
Along the way to the sacred site of Ireland's largest stone circle you find a wedge tomb dating 2,500BC and the ruin of the "New Church" from medieval times.
Take time for contemplation at Grange Stone Circle with it's 113 standing stones, tune into the ancient spiritual site, feel free to leave an offering or prayer.
We conclude the trip with an evening meal in a cosy restaurant closer to "home".
Duration: 5 1/2 hours (excluding meal)
distance: 44 miles from Mountshannon
weatherproof clothing and sturdy walking shoes recommended
